Our story

Pleasanton's link with yesteryear

1919

Walter Briggs Sr. founds Meadowlark on Foothill Road in Pleasanton — the first certified dairy in California providing new born babies in the NICU fresh, safe milk.

1950s

Jannes and Janna Takens immigrate from Groningen, the Netherlands, settle in Pleasanton, and begin working at the original Foothill Road dairy — the family's first generation at Meadowlark.

1960's

The Takens begins the process of building a drive-thru in downtown Pleasanton. It eventually opens in 1969 at 57 W. Neal Street, where the dairy still stands today.

1980s

Delivering School Milks around the Bay Area and soft serve unexpectidly arrives — and quietly becomes the thing the whole Tri-Valley lines up for.

Today

The third generation of the family runs both shops and the fourth generation just started working.

Good questions

What's the flavor of the day? +

Vanilla and chocolate are always on, along with orange, strawberry, and pineapple — all three vegan. The special flavor rotates daily — we post it every morning on Instagram.

Do you have vegan flavors? +

Yes — orange, strawberry, and pineapple are always on and vegan, and many rotating flavors are too, like raspberry, coconut, lemon, and mango. Ask when you pull up.

What's a frosty token? +

A $3.75 token good for any size frosty, slushie, or diablo. Great as stocking stuffers, birthday gifts, and party favors.

Do you sell more than ice cream? +

Always have. The drive-thru stocks milk, eggs, bread and other staples — plus party ice and dry ice.

What are your hours? +

Both shops are open every day, 8am to 9pm.
